Pearl Global has conducted extensive research to design and develop its unique technology for processing waste cleanly.

US EPA report

The US Environmental Protection Agency published the results of its research on burning tyres for fuel and tyre pyrolysis. The findings concluded that:

  • Batch pyrolysis generates massive toxic emissions
  • No focus on plant energy use or economics
  • No consideration of environmental impacts
  • Immobile, under-engineered approach
  • Mainly built in Asia – focus on reusing contaminated fuels produced
  • Major plant closures over multiple years (only one plant remaining at the time of the report from 34 plants identified and that remaining plant was arguably uneconomical)

Australian R&D Program

Existing rubber conversion processes have failed for a range of reasons, including high emissions, high capital costs, and high transport costs in carting feedstock to the plants and products away afterwards.

With its low air emissions, low capital cost and low transport costs, Pearl’s technology has been acknowledged as uniquely able to meet these challenges.

A major challenge that remains however, is how to unlock the value in the raw products.

In 2016 Pearl entered into a $3.5 million investment program to help it meet this challenge and develop its technology to produce even more valuable products.

The Australian Research Council awarded $1.3 million cash, which was met by $830,000 in-kind contributions from three universities (WA, Curtin and Newcastle), and Pearl will contribute cash and in-kind of $1.37 million.
